With fall classes starting September 8, it’s a timely pick for families planning after-school activities. Around Guelph This Week
Labour Day closures are coming — City Hall, rec centres, libraries, arenas, museums and the Waste Resource Innovation Centre will be closed Sept. 7. Waste collection will be delayed by one day.
Transit schedules change Sept. 6 — University routes return, Route 5 service improves, Route 99 gets more frequent, and a new Route 99 direct bus will run between the University Centre and Guelph Central Station.
Check if you’re on the voters’ list — Guelph residents can now check, update or add their information for the 2026 municipal and school board election. Voter cards will be mailed near the end of September.
Council is now in “lame duck” mode — With less than 75% of the current council returning, Guelph council is restricted from making certain major decisions until the new council is sworn in on Nov. 16.
Downtown construction expands after Labour Day — Starting Sept. 8, Wyndham Street work will extend from Carden to Woolwich, with St. George’s Square closed to traffic and Quebec/Douglas becoming temporary dead-end streets.
Evergreen Seniors Centre reopens next week — The centre reopens Sept. 9 after accessibility upgrades to washrooms, change rooms and the front entrance. City-run seniors’ programs will move back the same day.
Public health warns of rising financial strain — A new WDG Public Health report says Ontario Works cases in Guelph-Wellington are expected to rise 24% over the next two years as rent, food and cost-of-living pressures continue.
